Err Msg: Works Installed on Your Computer Was Not Updated (120943)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Works 3.0
  • Microsoft Works 3.0a
  • Microsoft Works 3.0b

This article was previously published under Q120943

SYMPTOMS

You may receive the following error message when running UPDATE.EXE to update your installation of Works for Windows version 3.0 or 3.0a to version 3.0b:
Microsoft Works for Windows installed on your computer was not updated.
The error message will usually occur when the update is 97-percent complete. At this point, it is checking the [Extensions] section of the WIN.INI file.

RESOLUTION

Make sure the paths for the Works extensions (that is, WKS, WDB, WPS, and WCM) are pointing to where Works for Windows 3.0 or 3.0a is installed on your machine.

After the line(s) in the [Extensions] section of the WIN.INI file have been corrected and saved, you will need to rerun the update.

MORE INFORMATION

For example, in the WIN.INI file, the WKS extension might show as follows:

WKS=C:\MSWORKS2\MSWORKS.EXE ^.WKS

If Works 3.0 for Windows is installed in the MSWORKS directory, the above path is incorrect and the update will not be able to make the necessary changes. The line will need to be changed to read as follows:

WKS=C:\MSWORKS\MSWORKS.EXE ^.WKS
