3COM 3c770 drivers Cause LAN Manager to Trap (118886)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft LAN Manager 2.2

This article was previously published under Q118886

SYMPTOMS

When installing 3Com's 3c770 card you might experience the following trap after using the LAN Manager setup program to install the 3COM 3c770 drivers.
TRAP 000D-CSLIM:1656, CS:0C40, IP:14AD in FDDI$
This error occurs when you first boot up the LAN Manager server, right after the 3COM 3c770 card attempts to bind.

CAUSE

For this network card to function properly, three new driver statements have to be placed in CONFIG.SYS. Setup inserts one of these (for the MAC) driver, but not the other two, without which the card functions improperly and causes the trap error.

RESOLUTION

Here is the recommended procedure for installing this adapter as outlined in 3COM's installation guide (pages 5-6):

  1. Use the LAN Manager Setup utility to import the FDDI drivers from the supplied floppy disk.
  2. Do not reboot. Run MENU.BAT from the supplied floppy disk. This edits your CONFIG.SYS correctly if LAN Manager is installed in the default directory (\LANMAN). If it is not, you must manually edit CONFIG.SYS to add these lines above the PROTMAN.OS2 and Network card driver lines:
          DEVICE=C:\LANMAN\DRIVERS\FDDI\FDDILINK\SMTOS2.SYS
          RUN=C:\LANMAN\DRIVERS\FDDI\FDDILINK\SMTSTART.EXE

  3. Edit PROTOCOL.INI if the computer is running as a LAN Manager server, otherwise use the default values. The comments in PROTOCOL.INI outline the necessary changes.
3COM recommends running MENU.BAT when installing the card on NetWare, Windows for Workgroups, LAN Manager, IBM LAN Server, and other unsupported network operating systems.

Please note that if you do not install in the default LAN Manager directory you must make change CONFIG.SYS file manually because MENU.BAT will not do it correctly.
