The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Access 2.0
  • Microsoft Access for Windows 95 7.0
  • Microsoft Access 97

This article was previously published under Q115569

SYMPTOMS

Advanced: Requires expert coding, interoperability, and multiuser skills.

When a user tries to open a table in Design view when that user has modify design permission for the table, the following error message may appear.

In Microsoft Access 7.0 and 97:

You can't open the table "tablename" for modification.

In Microsoft Access version 2.0:

Can't open table "tablename" for modifications. Open it read only?

CAUSE

Certain permissions are added by default when you give modify design permission on a table. These permissions are read data, update data, and delete data. However, the user must also have insert data permission on the table to open it in Design view, and this permission is not added automatically.

RESOLUTION

Give the user insert data permission on the table, in addition to modify design permission.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
