PRJ: Working Directory on Server After Workstation Install (113820)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Project for Windows 95 4.1
  • Microsoft Project for Windows 4.0

This article was previously published under Q113820

SYMPTOMS

When you run a workstation installation of Microsoft Project by running the Setup program from a network server, the Microsoft Project working directory is set to the directory on the network server instead of the directory to which you installed Microsoft Project on the workstation.

CAUSE

When you run the Setup program for Microsoft Project, the default directory or working directory is set to the directory to which you installed the program. For example, if you installed Microsoft Project to C:\WinProj, the directory that is selected in the Directories list when you open or save files is C:\WinProj.

However, when you run a workstation installation, so that you are running the program from a network server, the working directory is set to the network server directory as well.

WORKAROUND

Use the appropriate method to change the working directory for Microsoft Project.

Method 1: Starting Microsoft Project Using the Program Manager Icon

  1. Click the icon to select it.
  2. On the File menu, click Properties.
  3. Type the path for your Working Directory.
  4. Click OK. When you run the program by clicking the icon, the working directory will be the directory you designated in the Properties dialog box.
Method 2: Starting Microsoft Project from the Microsoft Office Manager (MOM)

  1. Click the Microsoft Office button on the MOM toolbar (usually the furthest to the right).
  2. Click Customize.
  3. Click either the Menu tab or the Toolbar tab, select the application for which you want to change the working directory, and then click Edit.
  4. In the Working Directory box, type the path of the working directory, and then click OK.
  5. Choose OK to exit. When you run the program by clicking on this tool, the working directory will be the directory you designated in MOM.
NOTE: When you change the working directory, Microsoft Project looks in that directory for the Global.mpt file, which contains the default settings used by Microsoft Project. To maintain the current settings, copy the Global.mpt file from the network location to the new working directory.
