SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project, when you attach a drawing object to a summary recurring task, the drawing object disappears.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when the Hide Bar field for the summary recurring task contains the value Yes. If a task does not display a task bar on the Gantt Chart, the drawing object you attach to the task is not displayed.

Note that this behavior is true for any task, but is most evident when you attach a task to a summary recurring task because the task bar is hidden by default. Additionally, it is more difficult to set the Hide Bar field value for a recurring task summary because the Information button displays the Recurring Task Information dialog box, and there is no Hide Task Bar option in this dialog box.

WORKAROUND

To display a drawing object attached to a summary recurring task, or to display the summary bar of a recurring task in the calendar view, do the following:

  1. Select a field in the Duration column.
  2. On the Insert menu, click Insert Column.
  3. In the Field Name list, select Hide Bar, and click OK.
  4. In the Hide Bar column for the summary task, enter No.
Any drawing object already attached to the summary recurring task appears, and any drawing object you attach to the summary recurring task will not disappear.

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

  1. In a new project, select a column in the first row, and then choose Insert Recurring Task from the Insert menu.
  2. In the Name box, type Meeting. If the Weekly option is selected under This Occurs, select the Wednesday check box. Under Length, select the For option, and in the box type 4. Choose OK.
  3. If the Drawing toolbar is not displayed, choose the Drawing button from the Standard toolbar.
  4. From the Drawing toolbar, choose the Rectangle button. Drag on the Gantt chart to create a rectangle.
  5. Select the rectangle object. From the Format menu, choose Drawing, and then choose Properties. Select the Size & Position tab. Select the Attach To Task option, and in the ID box, type 1 and choose OK.
The object no longer appears on the screen.
