SYMPTOMS

When you print from Works to a Hewlett-Packard (HP) LaserJet 4/4M, text may print too high within a bordered paragraph in a Word Processor document or within bordered cells in a Spreadsheet file.

This behavior occurs with fonts that are resident on the computer or fonts that are mapped to a printer font. The following fonts are resident on the HP LaserJet 4/4M printer:
  • Arial
  • Times New Roman
  • Symbol
  • Wingdings
These fonts produce the described behavior. Courier New is mapped to Courier. This also produces the described behavior.

RESOLUTION 1 (RECOMMENDED)

Change the Graphics Mode option in the Printer Setup dialog box from HP- GL/2 (default) to Raster, and select the Print TrueType As Graphics box.

NOTE: This resolution causes slower printing because a much larger print file is created.
  1. From the File menu in Works, choose Printer Setup.
  2. If you are using Works 3.0, select the HP LaserJet 4/4M, and choose the Setup button. The Printer Setup dialog box appears.

    If you are using Works 2.0, the Printer Setup dialog box appears immediately after step 1. With Works version 2.0, you will need to have the HP LaserJet 4/4M selected as the Default Printer in the Windows Control Panel.
  3. In the Printer Setup dialog box, choose Options.
  4. For Graphics Mode, select Raster.
  5. Select the Print TrueType As Graphics check box.
  6. Choose OK to close the Options dialog box, then choose OK to close the Printer Setup dialog box.

RESOLUTION 2 (WORKS 3.0 SPREADSHEET ONLY)

Add the following print heuristics section to the MSWORKS3.INI file.
  1. Run Windows Notepad, usually located in the Accessories group.
  2. From the File menu, choose Open.
  3. Change to the Windows directory.
  4. From the List Files Of Type box, select All Files.
  5. Select the MSWORKS3.INI file from the list of files and choose OK.
  6. Add the following lines to the end of the file, where X is the number for your LPT port, for example LPT1. Note that even though the section is titled Envelope, the information is relevant to spreadsheets.

    [Envelope]
    Options=1
    LPTX=1024

  7. Save the file and restart Works 3.0.

MORE INFORMATION

The HP LaserJet 4/4M has internal TrueType fonts that behave like normal TrueType fonts. This can cause problems in Works for Windows 2.x and 3.0 because the text may print too high if a border is involved in a Spreadsheet or Word Processor document.
