The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows NT Server 3.1
- Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 3.1
- Microsoft Windows NT Advanced Server 3.1
This article was previously published under Q104220 SYMPTOMS
Setting up Windows NT or Windows NT Advanced Server from the CD-ROM
drive on the COMPAQ SystemPro XL with the embedded SCSI controller IRQ
set to 2(9) will make the computer stop responding (hang) at the
status message "Running CHKDSK" after Setup has formatted the
newly-created partitions.
CAUSE
The COMPAQ SystemPro XL with an embedded SCSI controller is detected
as a NCR53c9x during setup. If the CD-ROM drive is connected to this
controller, there is a known problem if the controller is configured
in the EISA configuration using IRQ 2/9.
RESOLUTION
Reconfigure the controller to use any other unused IRQ such as 5.
To reconfigure the controller to use another IRQ, do the following:
- Run the COMPAQ EISA Configuration Utility.
- Choose Configure Computer.
- Choose View Or Edit Details.
- Press the PAGE DOWN key or the DOWN ARROW key to select Controller.
- Press the F6 key to "Edit resources."
- Change "Interrupt (IRQ)" from 2(9) to an unused interrupt. (5 is
often unused).
