Remove and Replace a Controller Battery

$DEV_NAME $FRU_NAME, has been selected.

To prepare for this service action, perform the following:

  • Enable the reserve Common Raid Module (CRM) function.

    1. Reserve the CRM for maintenance.

    2. Enter a description of the service action (replacing a controller battery).

    3. Select the estimated amount of time of the service action from the pull-down.

    4. Select the Reserve button.

      a) Other users will be alerted that this service action is in progress when they login.

  • Observe all ESD precautions.

    To Remove and Replace a Controller Battery

    1. If needed, to help locate the correct tray, activate the White locate LED:

      a) Turn On the White locate LED.

      b) View the tray locate LED location illustration.

    2. Locate the failed battery by checking the fault lights. If a fault is detected, the Service Action Required LED (Amber) will be on and the Service Action Allowed (Blue) LED should be on.

      a) Battery "A" is part of controller "A" in the upper left corner of the tray, battery "B" is part of controller "B" in the lower right corner of the tray when viewing the tray from the rear.

      b) View the battery location and LED illustration.

    3. Verify that the battery is ready to remove.

      a) The battery "State" and "Status" will be "Enable but Offline" and "Error".

      b) If the battery "State" and "Status" is not "Enable but Offline" and "Error" call your Sun Service provider or your next level of technical support.

      Important: Potential loss of data access - Never remove a battery assembly unless the Blue Service Action Allowed LED is "On".

    4. If the battery is ready for removal, push and hold the tension tab toward the battery latch/handle and then use the battery latch/handle to pull the battery out of the controller.

      Important: Do Not Remove the controller to replace the battery.

      a) View the battery removal illustration.

    5. Unpack the new battery and save all of the packing materials to return the failed battery or dispose of the battery properly. Use care when handling either the new or the failed battery.

    6. Insert the new battery until it connects with the connector and the LEDs become activated.

      a) All Fault LEDs should be off.

      b) The battery charged (solid green) or charging (flashing green) LED should be on.

      c) View the battery LED location illustration.

    7. Verify the battery "State" and "Status".

      a) The battery "State" should be "Enable" and the "Status" should be "OK".

      b) If the battery is not "Enable" and "OK" contact your Sun Service provider or your next level of technical support.

      Note: The battery "Status" may be "Degraded" until it becomes completely charged.

    8. The battery age must now be set.

      a) Set the battery age.

      CAUTION: Potential data loss. If the battery age is not set correctly, you may not be notified to change the battery at the correct time, and data loss could occur.

    9. Turn off the White locate LED used to locate the CRM.

      a) Turn Off the White locate LED.

    10. Disable the reserve CRM function.

      a) Select the Release button.
