Finding Files and Folders
Use Search to search for files within a system. NetFile looks for file names that match the pattern you enter in the Search For Files/Folders dialog.
NetFile performs a depth-first search. You can search all directories beneath the current directory until the file is found, or until all directories have been checked. The default maximum number of directories to search is set at 100. This means that a search operation will be carried out only on 100 subdirectories. If all your directories have not been covered in the search, you may have to restart the search operation at the directory where it stopped. The administrator can change this limit.
For example, suppose you select directory A to begin the search. Assume that A has 2 subdirectories named B and C. Assume B has 48 subdirectories. Assume C has 2 subdirectories D and E. Assume D has 50 subdirectories and E has 10. NetFile starts searching from A. The search moves to B and covers the 48 subdirectories. The search moves to C, and its subdirectory D. Since D has 50 subdirectories, the maximum count of 100 is reached within D. Other subdirectories or directories are not searched.
To continue the search, you need to manually restart the search at the next directory.
To search, type all or part of the name of the file or folder that you are searching for in the search pattern text box.
To Search for Files or Folders
- Click Search in the NetFile main window. The Search For Files/Folders dialog is displayed.
- Type all or part of the file name, or a series of characters, to search for in the File/Folder Name field.
Note
You cannot use wildcards such as asterisks (*) in the search pattern. For example, you cannot type *.txt or ???.gif.
- Type the folder or system from which you want to start the search in the Search Starting From field. Use the Change button to locate the required directory.
- Click Start.
NetFile starts looking for files in the system or folder that you selected in the Network Neighborhood pane. Then NetFile looks in the directories beneath the current directory level. It continues looking for matches until it has checked all the directories beneath your current directory level. The search is carried out till the search directories limit set by the administrator is reached.
Click Stop to cancel the search operation.
