Overview of Netlet

Netlet is an application that lets you use TCP/IP applications through a secure tunnel into your intranet. You can run TCP/IP applications (such as Telnet and SMTP), HTTP applications, and any fixed port applications.

You can run an application over the Netlet if:

Your Netlet behavior is defined through Netlet rules that are configured by your administrator.

Types of Netlet Rules

Your administrator can configure either static Netlet rules or dynamic Netlet rules.

Static Rule

A static rule specifies a destination host as a part of the rule. In this kind of rule, you do not have the option to specify the required destination host. The destination host is pre-configured by the administrator.

If a static rule is configured, the Netlet browser window appears as soon as you log on to the standard Portal Desktop.

For example, assume that your administrator has configured a telnet rule to connect to a host sesta. As soon as you login to the standard Portal Desktop, the Netlet browser window appears, and Netlet listens at the port specified by the administrator in the Netlet rule. You can open a terminal window and access the required host using:

telnet localhost portnumber

You can obtain the portnumber in the following ways:

Dynamic Rule

In a dynamic rule, the destination host is not specified as a part of the rule. You can specify the required destination host or target in the “Add new target” field using the Edit button in the Netlet channel.

When you define the target using the Edit page, the rule is added as a link in the Netlet channel. The next time you login to the standard Portal Desktop, you can directly select the link to run the required application.
