Continuous Volume Verify

The Continuous Volume Verify utility keeps track of software, firmware, and hardware errors, and reports an event when the number of errors increases. The Continuous Volume Verify utility does not disrupt device monitoring. Volumes are verified one at a time on a rotational basis.

To Execute Volume Verify Continuously on Arrays

  1. From the Continuous Volume Verify maintenance page, enable the Activate vol-verify checkbox.
Continuous Volume Verify will not run if this checkbox is disabled.
  2. Note:
    From the
Maintain Devices page, you can instruct the software to continuously run volume verify. From the Maintain Devices page:

    1. Select On from the Run 'vol verify' continuously pulldown menu.
Default options are Default, Off and On.
      • Select Default if you are running Continuous Volume Verify from the Manage-->Utilities-->Continuous Volume Verify page.
      • Select Off to prevent the scheduler from running Continuous Volume Verify on that specific array.

    2. Click Update.
The Run 'vol verify' continuously setting is dependent on the Manage --> Utilities --> Continuous Volume Verify settings. From the Continuous Volume Verify page, you must first enable the Activate vol-verify checkbox and select a time period for each day of the week for the Maintain Devices--> Run 'vol verify' continuously feature to execute.

  3. Enable or disable the Run with `fix' option checkbox.
The fix option might fix parity on bad blocks. Consult your service representative for details.
  4. Run on same array at most every X days--Configure the software so that Continuous Volume Verify runs on the same array every x days, where x can be a value between one day and continuously.
  5. Select the time of day to run for each day of the week.
At least one time-period from each day must be selected. If you select ALL THE TIME, Continuous Volume Verify will run when the Agent next runs (in five minutes or less).
  6. Select the Execution Rate.
The execution rate for the volume verification determines the impact on I/O access to the array. Select the execution rate: 8:fast = very high performance impact; 4:medium = high performance impact, or 1:slow = low performance impact. Selecting an execution rate of 1 takes longer to verify the volume, but has less effect on I/O.
  7. Type the Default Array Password.
The Continuous Volume Verify utility requires a password for the Sun StorEdge array that is being tested. If no password exists for the Sun StorEdge 6120 array, you can add a password using Manually Update a Device.
  8. Click Save Options.
  9. After you have configured and saved the options, click the Schedule Volume Verify link at the top of the page to activate the changes.
  10. Click the Device Summary link to display each monitored array with information about Continuous Volume Verify. The device summary displays the following:

Killing All Continuous Volume Verify Processes

  1. Stop the agent from running on the host that is monitoring the array:
    1. Click the Administration link in the Storage Automated Diagnostic Environment main window.
    2. Click the Start or Stop Agents link on the General Maintenance menu.
The Start or Stop Agents window is displayed.
    3. Enable the host's corresponding Stop checkbox.
    4. Click Update Agents State.
  2. Kill Continuous Volume Verify on all arrays:
    1. Click the Manage link in the Storage Automated Diagnostic Environment main window.
    2. Click the Utilities link.
    3. Click Continuous Volume Verify
    4. Click Kill Verify.
The Continuous Volume Verify operation on each array is aborted.
Note: The status will not be displayed in the Device Summary window. Use the proc list on the array to ensure the Continuous Volume Verify process has stopped running.
  3. Perform the array task (for example, an upgrade).
  4. Start the agent on the host that is monitoring the array:
    1. Click the Administration link in the Storage Automated Diagnostic Environment main window.
    2. Click the Start or Stop Agents link on the General Maintenance menu.
The Start or Stop Agents window is displayed.
    3. Enable the host's corresponding Start checkbox.
    4. Click Update Agents State. The status will be displayed in the Device Summary window. Continuous Volume Verify will, however, start only after the next execution of rasagent initiated from the cron.
