Adaptec AHA(r)-3985 PCI RAID Adapter Brings high-performance PCI RAID to entry level servers. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- HIGHLIGHTS * Delivers high performance through innovative multiprocessing RAID architecture * Provides three independent SCSI I/O channels * Supports multiple RAID levels 5, 1, 0, 0/1 * Includes easy-to-use installation and management utilities --------------------------------------------------------------------------- OVERVIEW Ensuring continuous access to valuable data is vital in today's highly competitive environment. The cost of data loss and server downtime due to drive failure is enormous in terms of operational interruption, reduced productivity and lost profitability. Until now, the only solutions available to protect critical operational data have been high-cost RAID controllers or performance-limiting RAID software. The Adaptec(r) AHA-3985 RAID adapter provides the first low-cost, high-performance PCI RAID adapter for entry-level and midrange servers. Ideal for small-to-medium storage requirements, the AHA-3985 RAID adapter brings a new approach for affordable fault-tolerant disk storage. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- KEY BENEFITS Innovative multiprocessing architecture The AHA-3985 RAID adapter employs an innovative multiprocessing architecture that dramatically lowers the cost for a high-performance RAID solution. Using the combined power of multiple RISC-based processors to independently execute assigned functions, the AHA-3985 RAID adapter cost effectively eliminates bottlenecks that typically slow the flow of data between an array and the server. RISC-based RAID coprocessor A high-powered RISC-based RAID coprocessor with dedicated DRAM is used to generate processor-intensive RAID 5 parity operations. The RAID coprocessor offloads all RAID 5 parity calculations from the host processor, freeing the server for other tasks. Three RISC-based SCSI Channels The AHA-3985 RAID adapter uses three Adaptec RISC-based, PCI-to-SCSI channel processors to provide high-speed data transfers to and from the drives in an array. PCI-to-PCI bridge An industry-compliant PCI-to-PCI bridge design permits the AHA-3985 RAID adapter to cost effectively transfer data between the three SCSI channels and host system memory at a burst rate of 133 Mbytes/second. SCSI command chaining syntax SCSI command chaining is an advanced technique that automates the processing of multiple I/O commands without host system involvement. This powerful syntax manages the AHA-3985 RAID adapter multiprocessing activities, reducing host system interrupts and I/O bus traffic while increasing overall data throughput by an array. Supports multiple RAID levels The AHA-3985 RAID adapter supports industry-standard RAID levels 5, 1, 0 and 0/1, allowing the user to choose the RAID level that best meets current and future data storage requirements. The AHA-3985 RAID adapter allows a RAID 0 array to be converted to a RAID 5 array without reformatting, reducing the time to restore a RAID 5 array from backup. Easy to use User-friendly menus make configuring, installing and managing the AHA-3985 RAID adapter easy. Real-time array status and performance information are available from the server console. Adaptec CI/O(tm)software permits array status and performance information to be monitored from any Windows-based client on the network. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- COMPLETE KIT * AHA-3985 MultiChannel(tm) RAID adapter * Adaptec RAID and driver software for NetWare * Adaptec CI/O Single Server software * Sytron's ProServe CX Lite(tm) tape backup software for NetWare * Device support for hard disk, removable, scanner, MO, CD-ROM, tape and DAT drives * Complete hardware and software documentation * Creating and Managing Arrays User's Guide * Three internal SCSI ribbon cables (external cables not included) --------------------------------------------------------------------------- TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS Computer bus: PCI local-bus Interface protocol: Bus master DMA Host bus data transfer rate: Up to 133 Mbytes/sec burst rate SCSI synchronous data rate: 30 Mbytes/sec (three channel Fast SCSI-2) SCSI asynchronous data rate: 9 Mbytes/sec (three channel Fast SCSI-2) Device protocol: 8 bit Fast SCSI-2 Advanced RAID features: Hot spare and hot swap drive support User defined drive rebuild User defined array verification Array performance and status monitoring User selectable broadcast and error logging Alterable stripe width Advanced SCSI features: 255 commands per AHA-3985 Scatter/gather Tagged command queuing Disconnect/reconnect Synchronous/asynchronous transfers Electrical drivers: Single-ended and active PCI bus: 32-bit, 33 Mhz SCSI channels: 3 fully independent PCI-to-SCSI channels bridged to system PCI bus Device support: Up to 7 devices per channel Array support: Drives can be supported in array or non-array configurations 4 arrays configurable per AHA-3985 RAID levels : 5, 1, 0 and 0/1 Drive configurations : RAID 5 : Min. 3 Max. 8 RAID 1 : Min. 2 Max. 2 RAID 0 : Min. 2 Max. 8 RAID 0/1 : Min. 4 Max. 16 Operating system support: NetWare 3.11, 3.12 and 4.x Note: System BIOS support for PCI-to-PCI bridges required.
