NOVELL TECHNICAL INFORMATION DOCUMENT TITLE: Novell Client 3.1 w/SP2 Updates TID #: 2956482 README FOR: 9531pt2.exe NOVELL PRODUCTS and VERSIONS: Novell Client 3.1 for Windows 95/98 ABSTRACT: Updates to the Novell Client 3.1 for Windows 95/98 Service Pack 2. Novell recommends that the current version of the client be used. The current Novell Clients for NetWare 5.x, 4.x and 3.x are available from <@@http://www.novell.com/download,http://www.novell.com/download@@>. NetWare 4.11/4.2 servers require an update prior to the installation of this Client Service Pack. The server update is located in TID <@@/cgi-bin/search/tidfinder.cgi?2952441,2952441@@>. ----------------------------------------------------------------- DISCLAIMER THE ORIGIN OF THIS INFORMATION MAY BE INTERNAL OR EXTERNAL TO NOVELL. To install the updates on a workstation where the client is already installed: 1. Copy the included files into their corresponding directories. 2. The file SAP_Ti.reg is a Windows 95/98 .reg-file with the necessary registry key to configure the timeout. The registry key data specifies the SAP timeout in milli-seconds. [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Network\Novell\System Config\NetWare DOS Requester\SAP Timeout] "0"="4000" To create the registry entry either double-click the .reg-file or create the registry key manually. 3. The workstation must be restarted after applying patches. To update the client source files for new client installations: 1. Copy all files into the WIN95\IBM_ENU directory. NOTE: The registry setting contained SAP_TI.REG will not be automatically set at the client. To Install the ADM files: Copy the ADM files to the network or locally and then add them as templates to be used in the policy file. ISSUE: 1) When printer drivers are supposed to be downloaded and printers being installed, intermittently not all printers are installed. This file uses an alternative method to copy the printer driver files from NetWare server, if the SetupInstallFile-function fails. 2) On Windows 95 printer drivers were always re-distributed, although they were already installed and the configuration in the Printer Policy package has not changed. This feature was introduced with 9531sp2.exe. This problem does not exist on Windows 98. 3) Some types of Laptop PC's can't shutdown or reboot. This issue occurs with HITACHI and FUJITSU laptop PC with YAMAHA Sound card and driver, and only occurs when using IP stack. IPHLPR.DLL uses illegal parameter against Microsoft DDK in "VxDLDR_UnLoadDevice" function. 4) v3.1sp2 & cd5 (b2w95clt.exe) both the same. The symptom is slow boot when OFF the LAN, i.e. laptop. In this case the LAN card is enabled, but not attached to any LAN, the boot time is measured at 7min.25sec. to the windows login prompt. When on the LAN the boot time is 1:15 to the Novell gui login prompt. This is only when nwip is configured on the machine. Parameters (retries to dss during startup=1, number of seconds between retries=10). With nwip removed and on the LAN , boot time was 1:25 to the Novell gui login. With nwip removed and OFF the LAN, boot time was 1:35 to the windows login prompt. 5) In combination with Novell BorderManager VPN client and a third party dialer, the user was unable to consistently re-login to the network if they either just disconnected the VPN connection or hung up the dial-up connection totally. The user was able to login via dial-up and VPN successfully the first time the machine was brought up, but usually subsequent attempts failed with an immediate response from the client. The error message was "Tree or server not be found". The symptom happens on both, the "LAN VPN"-connection and the "Dial-Up VPN" connection. It appeared that the LAN VPN connection failed with the Microsoft and the third party dialer. The client is configured for IPX only or IPX and IP protocol, but the client is connecting to an IPX network only. The patch fixes this problem. The SAP timeout is calculated on the basis of the board transport time. As the VPN adapter always sets this value to 1, the SAP Timeout calculated for the VPN adapter was the same as on a local LAN adapter. When the client detects that a PPP-connection is used it will use the SAP Timeout that is configured in the registry instead of the dynamically calculated value based on the board transport time. The default value for SAP Timeout is 3000 milli-seconds. 6) Broadcast message causes high workstation utilization. TID 10019679 7) Files are not closed when exiting an application. TID 10024875 8) "Novell delivered applications for WIN95-00805FB257AC.WS.AD.RWBII" (the NDS name of the workstation object) appears in the title bar of the NAL window and no application icons appear. TID 10016450 9) Duplicate profiles created on Windows NT 4.0 workstation with NW Client 4.6 SP1. TID 10019709 10) Dos application GPF when trying to access a file already in use. 11) With bindery logins the variable returns the user name with the same case as it was entered on the GUI login screen, e.g. "TeStUsEr". This may cause a problem when using the %LOGIN_NAME variable to set a DOS variable, which then will be used. Previous client versions did uppercase the variable. On DS logins the variable returns the same case as the user was created in DS. 12) TID 10022734. Windows 95/98 Workstation associated application objects calling batch files needing access to the NetWare file system do not run if set to force run. 13) TID 2942630.
