RGBA lookup table question

Hello,

Does a color lookup table with external format RGBA,datatype FLOAT, and
table size 256, contain only 256 float values. This seems to be the case
and I am wondering how this table is used for looking up data with an
external format of BYTE, SHORT or RGBA data. Can anyone help?
