North American English Directory, FTP Site

This directory contains files that are used with the Microsoft(r) 
Encarta(r) 96 Encyclopedia CD-ROM, North American English Edition. 
This edition is sold in the United States and Canada. Files for 
the World English edition, sold outside North America, are 
located in the ..\WorldEng directory.

FOR MACINTOSH OS: These are the correct update files (.eyb) 
for the Macintosh version of Encarta 96 Encyclopedia.

The following files are in this directory:

enc96fix.exe	This file fixes a problem with non-appearing article 
		updates. For more information, see enc96fix.exe, 
		below.
sep95a.eyb	The September 1995 Yearbook Builder Update for 
		Encarta 96 Encyclopedia, North American English Ed.
oct95a.eyb	The October 1995 Yearbook Builder Update for 
		Encarta 96 Encyclopedia, North American English Ed.
nov95a.eyb	The November 1995 Yearbook Builder Update for 
		Encarta 96 Encyclopedia, North American English Ed.
dec95a.eyb	The December 1995 Yearbook Builder Update for 
		Encarta 96 Encyclopedia, North American English Ed.
jan96a.eyb	The January 96 Yearbook Builder Update for 
		Encarta 96 Encyclopedia, North American English Ed.

ENC96FIX.EXE
Read this section if you are running Windows(r) 95 and you chose 
Slower Execution during setup, or if you cannot see the article 
updates when you run Encarta.

This file corrects a problem with the Windows 95 registry that 
occurs when you select the slower execution option when setting 
up Encarta 96 Encyclopedia. (This problem does not occur with the 
faster execution option.) The result of the registry problem is 
that the Yearbook Builder feature of Encarta does not display 
updated articles properly. 

To test for and repair the registry problem:

1.	In Encarta 96 Encyclopedia, click on Find and open the 
	article on Yugoslavia. For more information about using 
	Pinpointer to search for articles, see online Help.

2.	Examine the article's title bar - the black bar that contains 
	the word "Yugoslavia." 

	If the title bar has a yellow/orange yearbook icon at its 
	right-hand side, and you can click on that icon to bring up 
	an update called "The Shameful Ending of Yugoslavia," then 
	your encyclopedia is installed correctly and you do not need 
	to proceed to step 3. 

	If the title bar does not have a yearbook icon at its 
	right-hand side, then proceed to step three. 

3.	Download and run enc96fix.exe. Your encyclopedia is repaired.



TROUBLESHOOTING
Article Update Icons Don't Appear:
Users who choose the Slow execution option when setting up Encarta 96 
Encyclopedia may not be able to see the update icons in encyclopedia 
articles. To fix this problem, download the enc96fix.EXE file from 
the FTP site and run it on your computer.


Cannot Integrate Yearbook Builder Files:
Some users are consistently experiencing problems during file 
downloads that result in the corruption of the .eyb file, causing 
Encarta to display a message during integration that says the files 
are the wrong version for North America. The error actually occurs 
because the file is corrupt. If the .eyb file you downloaded ends 
in '95a.eyb', then it is the correct version for the North American 
English version of Encarta. 

These download problems are not occurring within Encarta but rather 
during the download process itself. We are working to determine the 
source of the problems and will post new information to this file 
when the problem is resolved. In the interim, we have found that 
most users are able to work around this problem by downloading the 
Yearbook Builder files as self-extracting executable files instead of in 
their original .eyb format. If you cannot successfully integrate 
.eyb files, check the Encarta\PSS\US directory for more information 
and for the files in .exe format.

DOWNLOADING YEARBOOK BUILDER UPDATES
The downloading instructions below are specific to two popular 
browsing applications.

Note: If an error occurs after you click the Integrate button in the 
Yearbook Builder feature, download the update installment (the .eyb 
file) again and click on Integrate in Yearbook Builder again.

To download updates using SPRY Mosaic (CompuServe edition)
1.	Click the file you wish to download.
2.	In the dialog box that appears, click Yes. The downloading 
	process begins and will take several minutes.
3.	When the downloading process is completed, select Save from 
	the File menu. Save the file to your Yearbook directory.
4.	In Encarta Encyclopedia, open the Yearbook Builder feature 
	and click the Add New Months button.
5.	Click the Integrate button and follow the instructions that 
	appear on the screen.

To download updates using Netscape:
1.	Click the file you wish to download. The downloading process 
	begins and will take several minutes (about 10 minutes at 9600 
	bps modem speed).
2.	When the downloading process is completed, select Save from the 
	File menu. Save the file to your Yearbook directory.
3.	In Encarta Encyclopedia, open the Yearbook Builder feature and 
	click the Add New Months button.
4.	Click the Integrate button and follow the instructions that 
	appear on the screen.
