The name of the compressed file will be kit_name-dcx_vaxexe for OpenVMS VAX or kit_name-dcx_axpexe for OpenVMS Alpha. Once the file is copied to your system, it can be expanded by typing RUN compressed_file. The resultant file will be the OpenVMS saveset or PCSI installation file which can be used to install the ECO. Copyright (c) Compaq Computer Corporation 1998, 1999. All rights reserved. OP/SYS: OpenVMS Alpha on DIGITAL Personal WorkStation (DPWS) only COMPONENT: DQDriver SOURCE: Compaq Computer Corporation ECO INFORMATION: ECO Kit Name: ALPDRIV10_071 ECO Kits Superseded by This ECO Kit: ALPDRIV07_071 ECO Kit Approximate Size: 270 Blocks Kit Applies To: OpenVMS Alpha V7.1, V7.1-1H1, V7.1-1H2 System/Cluster Reboot Necessary: Yes Rolling Re-boot Supported: Yes Installation Rating: INSTALL_2 2 - To be installed on all systems running the listed version(s) of OpenVMS and using the following feature(s): Digital Personal WorkStations 433au, 500au, or 600au; Compaq/Panasonic SR8583 DVD-ROM, or Iomega Zip support Kit Dependencies: The following remedial kit(s) must be installed BEFORE installation of this kit: None In order to receive all the corrections listed in this kit, the following remedial kits should also be installed: None ECO KIT SUMMARY: An ECO kit exists for OpenVMS Alpha V7.1 through V7.1-1H2 on OpenVMS Alpha V7.1 through V7.1-1H2. Problems addressed in the ALPDRIV10_071 kit: o The new version of the DQDRIVER now provides support for the Iomega ATAPI Zip drive. This drive allows use of the same 100MB Iomega Zip diskettes that are widely used as a backup and transport media for personal computers and allows easy data interchange with these systems. The particular drives supported are Iomega part numbers 270928-003 (with a beige bezel) and 270928-703 (with a frost white bezel). These drives are available from Compaq Computer Corporation and contain firmware version "12.A". o ATAPI discs, that had a maximum Logical Block Number (LBN) of 0x...1FF, were sized 0x100 2K blocks (1024 512-byte blocks) too small. o An ATAPI drive request to transfer an invalid amount of data could possibly cause an allocated buffer to be overrun. o The system hung when trying to load the SYSINIT.EXE image. o During packack, a second command could be issued to a drive while the first command was still executing. o Support for the Compaq/Panasonic SR8583 was added. o The device timeout was changed to 15 seconds to accommodate the Toshiba XM-6302B CD-ROM drive. o Autoconfiguring of the DQDRIVER was fixed so that either autoconfiguration or a manual, explicit ISA bus I/O address is accepted. o A "can not mount ISO 9660 volume" error occurred so a change was necessary for ISO-9660 (F11CACP) and High Sierra (F11DACP) support. NEW FUNCTIONALITY INTRODUCED IN ALPDRIV07_071 KIT o OpenVMS IDE (ATAPI) CD-ROM Device Driver DIGITAL is pleased to introduce the OpenVMS IDE (ATAPI) CD-ROM Device Driver Kit for use with Digital Personal WorkStations (DPWS) 433au, 500au, and 600au systems. This software allows DIGITAL OpenVMS customers to install OpenVMS Alpha Version 7.1-1H2 software using the IDE (ATAPI) CD-ROM drives on DPWS 433au, 500au, and 600au systems. In addition, this diskette contains a command procedure to install additional software on system disks. + Most modern ATA/IDE/EIDE controllers implement two busses: a primary bus and a secondary bus. You can attach up to two units to each of these busses. The two units are known (for historical reasons) as the Master and Slave units. This allows a total of up to four units to be attached to most current ATA/IDE/EIDE controllers. OpenVMS software and the Console firmware implement the following device naming conventions: Device | | Name | Bus | Unit ----------+-----------+-------- | | DQA0: | Primary | Master DQA1: | Primary | Slave | | DQB0: | Secondary | Master Known Restrictions: o If the IDE CD-ROM driver fails to install or configure properly, please contact your DIGITAL customer representative to ensure that your system hardware and firmware are up-to-date. To check to see whether your system is current, do the following: + At the console prompt enter the following command: >>>SHOW CONFIG + Your firmware is up-to-date and current with this driver if the following revision information (or later) is displayed: Firmware SRM Console: V6.7-195 ARC Console: 5.65 PALcode: VMS PALcode V1.20-13, OSF PALcode V1.22-14 SROM Version: V5.15 + Your hardware is current and compatible with this driver if your device is shown as: Bus 00 Slot 07: Cypress PCI Peripheral Controller o When you boot using the OpenVMS IDE CD-ROM Device Driver Diskette, the system displays a message that the SYS$CPU_ROUTINES are being loaded from the secondary boot device (the diskette). A second informational message is then displayed stating that the system is unable to locate the CPU routines. For example: Loading SYS$CPU_ROUTINES_1E05.EXE from the Secondary Boot Media. %SYSBOOT-I-FILENOTLOC, Unable to locate SYS$CPU_ROUTINES_1E05.EXE Disregard this informational error message. The system will load the CPU routines from the primary boot device (the CD-ROM). o If you boot an ATAPI device (for example, DQB0:), any other unit on the same IDE bus (for example, DQB1:) will not be available. Units on the alternate IDE bus (for example, DQA0: and DQA1:) will be available. o Supported CD-ROM Drives The IDE CD-ROM Device Driver should work with a wide range of IDE (ATAPI) CD-ROM drives. The following CD-ROM drives have been tested by OpenVMS Engineering. Refer to the "Systems and Options Catalog" for the supported drives. + Sony CDU711 CD-ROM + Toshiba XM-5702B 12x CD-ROM + Toshiba XM-6202B 32x CD-ROM + Toshiba SD-M1102 DVD-ROM (as a 24x CD-ROM drive) o Console Environmental Variable os_type Set to OpenVMS The console supports both the OpenVMS and Digital UNIX platforms. The Console Environmental Variable os_type must be set to OpenVMS in order for the console to display the correct device name for the IDE CD-ROM driver. To ensure that the Environmental Variable os_type has been set to OpenVMS, enter the following command: >>>show os_type If the Console Environmental Variable os_type displays as UNIX, enter the following commands: >>>set os_type OpenVMS >>>show os_type The Console Environmental Variable os_type should now display as OpenVMS. o Audio Features This version of the IDE CD-ROM Device Driver does not support playing audio (CD-DA) disks. Support will be added in a future release. o DVD Media This version of the OpenVMS IDE CD-ROM Device Driver is capable of reading DVD-ROM disks. This allows the mounting of a DVD-ROM disk written with ISO-9660 formatting. However, as of this release, OpenVMS does not support the UDF or Micro UDF (DVD-ROM standard) file formats. + Restriction with DVD Media After a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM disk has been mounted, you can use the $SHOW DEVICE/FULL command to show the total number of OpenVMS 512-byte blocks stored on the disk. This command also shows a number of cylinders, tracks, and sectors on the disk. For a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM device, these numbers are synthesized based on the number of blocks on thedisk. For DVD-ROM disks with more than 2,097,152 512-byte blocks (about 1.05 GB), the number of cylinders reported will be incorrect (truncated to 16 bits). o Magnetic Disk Drives Not Supported Although the IDE CD-ROM Driver is also capable of controlling industry-standard ATA/IDE/EIDE magnetic disk drives, this is presently unsupported in this version of the driver. In particular, this version of the IDE CD-ROM Device Driver does not implement Direct Memory Access (DMA) and, therefore, magnetic disks will not achieve the full performance possible. o Problem with Initializing Some Magnetic Disks Some magnetic disks come pre-written with a data pattern that contains all '1's in the last block (and a particular byte in the last block). OpenVMS software interpets this pattern as an indication that the disk is an ancient "diagnostic pack", that is, a bad-block-free pack. OpenVMS will not initialize these disks. You can restore a backup onto these disks, even though you will still receive the warning. You can also use the WRITE_PBLK physical I/O function to over-write the last sector on the disk with a different data pattern. Note that the address passed to WRITE_PBLK is *NOT* an LBN; rather, it is in the form of cylinder, head, and sector. See the "I/O User's Guide" for further information.
