DSNlink Version 2.3 for Compaq's DIGITAL UNIX[R] Readme First Updated: 21-January-1999 Dear Customer, This letter contains a brief description of DSNlink Version 2.3 for Compaq's DIGITAL UNIX and explains how to copy the kit to your system and what to do after you copy the kit. Note: Before you install DSNlink Version 2.3 verify that the DSNlink host at your Customer Support Center is running DSNlink Version 2.2B or higher. Do not install DSNlink if the host is running earlier versions of DSNlink. The following are the topics in this letter: 1.0 About DSNlink Version 2.3 for DIGITAL UNIX 2.0 Copying the Files 3.0 After You Copy the Files 1 About DSNlink Version 2.3 for Compaq's DIGITAL UNIX You can install DSNlink Version 2.3 on Alpha systems running DIGITAL UNIX Version 4.0b or 4.0d. 1.1 What's New in DSNlink Version 2.3 DSNlink Version 2.3 includes the following features: o The modem transport has several improvements. o The DECwindows Motif interface is identical to the interface in the DSNlink Version 2.2 for OpenVMS product. o There are several bug fixes. For detailed information, see the DSNlink Release Notes. 1.2 File Names and Descriptions The DSNlink Version 2.3 files are listed in Table 1. Make sure your system has enough free disk space to accommodate them. The following sections explain how to get the files. 2.1 Download the Kit from the World Wide Web 1. Go to the DSNlink page at the following URL: http://www.support.compaq.com/dsnlink/ The DSNlink page appears. 2. Click on Download Kits. A page appears with links to the kits for downloading. 3. Click on DSNlink Version 2.3 for DIGITAL UNIX(R) The tar file and documentation files appear. 4. Using your browser's conventions, download the files. 5. Copy the files to the DIGITAL UNIX system where you want to install DSNlink. You can also copy the files to a Remote Installation Services (RIS) server. 6. Go to Section 3 for information about what you do after downloading the kit. 2.2 Copying Files from the FTP Site To copy the DSNlink Version 2.3 for DIGITAL UNIX files from the FTP site: 1. Use anonymous FTP to access the DSNlink kit: % ftp ftp.support.compaq.com Connected to ftp.support.compaq.com. . . . 2. Log in as anonymous and use your e-mail address for the password: Name ( ftp.support.compaq.com:gomez): anonymous 331 Anonymous access allowed, send identity (e-mail name) as password. Password: . . . 3. Set default to the directory with the DSNlink Version 2.3 files: ftp> cd /public/DSNlink/unix/ 250 CWD command successful. Note that the documentation files are also included in the DSNA230.tar file. Therefore, you need to copy only the docu- mentation you want to read before starting the installation. 5. Exit FTP with the quit or bye command. 3 After You Copy the Files If this is an initial installation of DSNlink, make sure you have your authentication key, access number, and the location of your Customer Support Center before beginning the installation. If you have a previous version of DSNlink, you can use your access number and authentication key with DSNlink Version 2.3. After you copy the files to your system, do the following: 1. Become root and create a kit area on your disk by making a kit directory and extracting the kit archive. For example: # mkdir kit # cd kit # tar xvf ../DSNA230.tar . . . 2. Before you print or display the documentation files, uncom- press them with with the uncompress command. For example: # uncompress dsna230_iguide.ps.Z 3. Print or display the uncompressed DSNlink Installation Guide. (The compressed file names end in .Z. The uncompressed files names end in .ps or .txt.) 4. Install the kit using setld. Refer to the instructions in the DSNlink Installation Guide. Also, check the posinstallation section of the DSNlink In- stallation Guide for customizable options. ATTENTION USERS OF DECNET/OSI FOR DIGITAL UNIX: DECnet/OSI for DIGITAL UNIX may hang the installation. We recommend shutting down DECnet during the installation us- ing the /usr/sbin/decnetshutdown command.
