COMPAQ Software Product Description ___________________________________________________________________ PRODUCT NAME: DECtalk[TM] Software Developer's SPD 55.72.05 Kit, Version 4.5.1 for Windows NT and Windows 95/98 DESCRIPTION DECtalk[TM] Software Developer's Kit (SDK), Version 4.5.1 for Windows NT[R], Windows 95[R], and Windows 98[R], consists of sample applica- tions and application programming interfaces (APIs) based on Digital Equipment Corporation's industry-leading Text-To-Speech (TTS) tech- nology. DECtalk Software gives software developers the tools and utilities that allow them to incorporate into their applications DECtalk modules that convert standard ASCII text into highly intelligible and natural-sounding speech that is playable through audio hardware on DIGITAL's AlphaStation[TM] workstations and AlphaServer[TM] servers for Windows NT and Intel[R] personal computers for Windows NT, Windows 95, and Windows 98. While the SDK is provided in American English, once development is completed, the developer can choose to incorporate other languages into the final application. Available languages, in addition to American English, include: British English, Castilian (European) Spanish, Latin American Spanish, and German. Features include: o American English TTS o British English TTS o Latin American Spanish TTS o Castilian Spanish TTS April 1999 AE-RETBA-TE o German TTS o MultiLanguage capability for changing languages "on-the-fly" o Nine defined voice personalities (four female, four male, and one child) o Year 2000 ready o Ability to say letters, words, or phrases o Pause, continue, and stop speaking controls o Variable speaking rates from 75 words per minute to 600 words per minute o Large internal (fixed) dictionary (dictionary size depends on language) o User-definable pronunciation dictionary o Punctuation control for pauses, pitch, and stress o Output stereo volume control o Ability to say proper names, dates, numbers, many popular abbreviations o Ability to recognize same spelling, different pronunciation o Intelligent E-Mail preprocessing capability o Volume control via software commands o Ability to synthesize to a file o Ability to synthesize to memory o Ability to play audio WAVE files o Ability to generate DTMF tones for dialing o Ability to generate tones of a specified frequency and duration o Voice control commands may be inserted into any text file o Robust Digital Application Programming Interface (DAPI) for the serious developer 2 o Microsoft[R] Speech Application Programming Interface (SAPI) functions for standard SAPI-enabled applications o Multiple instances of the Speech object on a single processor can be run concurrently for support of more than one voice application at a time The DECtalk Software Developer's Kit includes: o An API (DAPI) that provides software developers with the tools, util- ities, and documentation that gives them the ability to include DECtalk in their applications with functions for all the features listed above. Documentation and sample code are provided. o "Speak", an application that allows a user to synthesize a text file or text typed into a window into natural-sounding speech. It provides control of voice and speaking rate. o A User-Dictionary Build Tool, "windic", for creating customized pro- nunciation dictionaries. o "DTsample", a simple text editor with integrated text to speech. DTsample is provided as sample code with C language sources for easy development. o All currently available languages. o MultiLanguage capability. o Microsoft SAPI functions. NOTE: For OEMS who require access to DECtalk source code for porting purposes, porting arrangements can be accommodated via the terms and conditions of an OEM contract. 3 HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS An audio device (typically a Sound Blaster[R] compatible audio card) that is supported by the specified operating environment (see the "Software Requirements" section) is needed. Processors Supported o Any DIGITAL[TM] AlphaStation NT or Alpha NT Server or o Intel[R] 486 PC that is 50 MHz or faster or o Any Pentium[R] based personal computer Disk Space Requirements Disk space required for installation: 3.0 Mbytes for the first language, with an additional 1 Mbyte for each additional language. Disk space required for use (permanent): 3.0 Mbytes for the first language, with an additional 1 Mbyte for each additional language. Memory Requirements for DECtalk Software The minimum system memory requirements for running applications on Windows NT, Windows 95, or Windows 98. SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS Supported Operating Systems: o Windows NT 3.51 or 4.0 o Windows 95 o Windows 98 4 Programming Language: For the development of applications and programs that use DECtalk Software for Windows NT or Windows 95, the C programming language is required. SOFTWARE LICENSING The SDK offers a single user execution license, which includes the authorization to use four (4) concurrent DECtalk threads for develop- ment and testing purposes. For application deployment to end-users, Runtime Licenses will be re- quired for each DECtalk concurrent process that runs on an individ- ual computer system or server. (See the "Ordering Information" sec- tion for details.) SOFTWARE WARRANTY Warranty for the DECtalk Software SDK is provided by DIGITAL with the purchase of the SDK. GROWTH CONSIDERATIONS While upgradability and compatibility are key considerations in future product development, the minimum hardware/software requirements for any future version of this product may be different from the requirements for the current version. DISTRIBUTION MEDIA The SDK is distributed in one media kit that includes documentation, a single user execution license with 4 concurrent development threads allowable, and DECtalk software with all the languages supported by DECtalk as well as the MultiLanguage capability.
