Digital Equipment Corporation KZPSA ADAPTER UTILITIES cnfgdiag V1.7 fwupdate V1.7 January 21, 1998 This readme file describes the KZPSA Adapter Utilities. It describes how to run the Configuration and Diagnostic Utility and the Firmware Update Utility. KNOWN PROBLEMS The system must be rebooted after running FWUPDATE.EXE. Termination discovery in CNFGDIAG does not work properly. It may report termination present when it is not, or not present when it is. The system must be rebooted after running CNFGDIAG.EXE or not all SCSI devices connected to the KZPSA will be visible. The program FWUPDATE.EXE will not run properly from a CD. It will hang your system. To run this program, copy it and the firmware files you need to a FAT formatted floppy. CNFGDIAG.EXE will run from the CD, you will need to specify the path to your CD and to CNFGDIAG.EXE in response to the program to run: prompt (see below). Use of versions of FWUPDATE.EXE earlier than V1.4 in an AlphaServer 4100 will corrupt the KZPSA FLASH. A corrupted board this way can be fixed by running FWUPDATE.EXE V1.4 or later. GENERAL OVERVIEW Two of the KZPSA Utilities run from the ARC console. After you power up your system, the Alpha AXP should go through its start up sequence and then display the ARC Boot Menu on your display terminal. Typically, your display should look like the following: ARC Multiboot Alpha AXP Version x.y-z Copyright (c) 1993 Microsoft Corporation Copyright (c) 1993 Digital Equipment Corporation Boot Menu: (Several lines of menu choices displayed here) If you do not see this menu, refer to your system documentation for more information about initially setting up your Alpha AXP to run from the ARC console. This is normally done typing "ARC" and Enter. NOTE: Refer to the Release Notes for the minimum revision levels of the ARC firmware You should have received a KZPSA software utilities diskette with your KZPSA. Select Run a program from the Boot menu. Place the utilities diskette into the floppy drive. If you want to invoke the configuration/diagnostic utility, type a:\cnfgdiag.exe at the "Program to run" prompt. If you want to invoke the firmware update utility type a:\fwupdate.exe at the "Program to run" prompt. CONFIGURATION AND DIAGNOSTIC UTILITY The KZPSA configuration and diagnostic utility (cnfgdiag.exe) allows you to configure and test your KZPSA adapter by displaying the following information: o Adapter Specific Parameters: * Firmware and hardware revisions * KZPSA SCSI ID * Termpower status * Termination status * Virtual slot the KZPSA resides in * SCSI devices connected to the KZPSA o Device specific parameters: * Wide negotiation * Synchronous negotiation * Tagged queuing * Disconnect o Fast SCSI mode status o Bus reset on power-up status o Hardware and firmware error logs The following information can be changed by this utility: o KZPSA SCSI ID o Termpower status o Fast SCSI mode status o Bus reset on power-up status o Device specific parameters: * Wide negotiation * Synchronous negotiation * Tagged queuing * Disconnect o A power-on self-test (POST) and a SCSI device self-test can be invoked from this utility. The user can also reset the SCSI bus from this utility. INITIAL SCREEN Use the arrow keys to select the KZPSA you wish to configure or test. Once selected, press Enter to proceed to the Options Window. OPTIONS WINDOW Use the arrow keys to select the option you wish to proceed with. You can select the following: o SCSI options This allows the user to see devices connected to the KZPSA and modify parameters associated with them. It also allows users to configure SCSI parameters such as fast SCSI mode, supply termpower from the KZPSA, tagged command queuing, and power-on SCSI reset. o Diagnostics Allows the user to run POST and SCSI device self-tests. o Logs Allows the user to display firmware and hardware error logs. Once the option is selected press Enter to proceed with that option. SCSI OPTIONS WINDOW Use the arrow keys to select the following: * List existing SCSI devices * Configure device specific parameters * Reset the SCSI bus Use the spacebar to : * Change the SCSI ID * Toggle Fast Mode and Reset-on-Power Up from Enabled to Disabled. * Toggle Termpower from Supplied to Absent. * Select Save and Exit to save parameter modifications. * Select Use Default Setting to return to the factory default settings CONFIGURING DEVICE PARAMETER WINDOW Use the arrow keys to move through the device and parameter choices. Use the spacebar to toggle between YES and NO. Select Save and Exit to save parameter modifications. Select Use Default Setting to return to the factory default settings. The user has the ability to modify the following parameters: o Synchronous negotiation o Wide negotiation o Tagged Queuing o Forced Disconnect o A YES disables the specified device from negotiating or implementing the specified parameter. o A NO allows the specified device to negotiate or implement the specified parameter. DIAGNOSTIC WINDOW The user can run the Power-On Self Test (POST) or SCSI Device Self Tests. Use the space bar to toggle the Diagnostic Test from Power-On Self Test to SCSI Device Self Test. Press the down arrow key to select the Error Action. Use the space bar to toggle through to possible error actions. The possible error actions are: o Halt on Error The diagnostic test completely stops when an error occurs. o Loop on Error The diagnostic test runs the specific failing test repeatedly. o Continue on Error The diagnostic test continues to run saving the first 10 errors in the error buffer. (This only occurs if Loop At End is YES). Press the down arrow key again to select Loop At End. Use the space bar to toggle from NO to YES. Press Enter to start the test. FIRMWARE UPDATE UTILITY *** NOTE *** It may take more than a minute to load application. Use the arrow keys to select the KZPSA you wish to update along with the firmware you wish to load. If there is only one KZPSA in your system and one revision of firmware on your floppy, press Enter twice to initiate loading the firmware from the floppy.
