Choose a Method to Update Firmware

Update MethodRequirements Description
BOOTP Network Tru64Unix Server Update firmware from a network using BOOTP protocol
MOP Network OpenVMS Server Update firmware from a network using MOP protocol
System Disk OpenVMS System Update firmware by copying firmware files to system disk then booting the firmware update utility on system disk.Updating firmware via a SAN disk is not supported.

Update Firmware From Floppy Disk

Console firmware V5.4 and higher requires two FAT-formatted floppy disks (disk1 and disk2).
Updating I/O option firmware requires one floppy disk.(disk3)
disk1.zip Disk 1 firmware files
  • Download the files or download/extract the zip file to floppy disk. Each file set or each .zip file requires one floppy disk.
  • Update console firmware with Disk1 and Disk2
  • Update I/O Option firmware with Disk3
  • Shutdown or reset your machine to the SRM console. If you're running NT, select "Update AlphaBios" from the setup menu to reach the SRM console.
  • Type LFU at the console prompt then specify your floppy drive as the load device (e.g. dva0).You must have the disk with the corresponding files in your drive. For the file-name:
    - Type as4x00cp to update only console
    or
    - Type as4x00io to update only I/O option firmware.
    or
    - Type as4x00fw to update both console and I/O option firmware, if your console is revision V1.2 or greater.
    After accessing Disk1, the LFU will prompt you for Disk2 and then Disk3 when needed in the update.
  • Type update to load firmware into flash memory before typing exit to leave the LFU.
  • Using Three Disks: After updating console firmware with Disk1 and Disk2, you can update I/O firmware from Disk3 by entering the LFU command after the UPD> prompt. When prompted for input, provide the "IO LFU file list" filename.

BOOTP Network Update - Tru64UNIX

Model Firmware Image

  • Download the firmware image to a TRU64Unix Server.
  • Register the Ethernet MAC address of the client with the TRU64Unix administrator.
  • Invoke BOOTP from the client SRM terminal. (e.g. boot eia0)
  • Please consult your adminstrator for additional information on BOOTP booting.

MOP Network Update - OpenVMS

Download the firmware image to the MOP directory on an OpenVMS system. Apply this command to the downloaded file to ensure the file is in the proper fixed record format for MOP booting:

$ set file/attr=(rfm:fix,lrl:512,mrs:512,rat:none) file-name.sys

Consult your adminstrator for additional information on MOP booting.

System Disk Firmware Update - OpenVMS

  • Download the firmware image to an OpenVMS system then enter the following commands:
    $ rename firmware image to fwupdate.exe
    $ set file/attr=(rfm:fix,lrl:512,mrs:512,rat:none) fwupdate.exe
    $ copy/contiguous fwupdate.exe dka0:[sys0.sysexe]
    (replace dka0 with your system disk name)
  • Shut down the operating system, to get to the console prompt
  • Boot the update utility: boot dka100 -flags 0,a0
    (replace dka100 with your system disk name.)
  • Enter the following after the Bootfile: prompt:
    Bootfile: [sys0.sysexe]fwupdate.exe
