Bytes (Queues)

DESCRIPTION
The number of "Bytes" is the number of bytes currently used by Sun MTP on a
particular system queue. A queue is an operating system resource enabling
interprocess communication.

VALUES
The value of "Bytes" is a numeric quantity obtained directly from the
system with the msgctl system call.

INTERPRETATION
The number of "Bytes" gives an idea of how much a queue is being utilized. The
value is the total number of bytes used by messages on a queue. The number of
messages appears in the "Messages" column.

Note that the operating system maintains these queues, not the Sun MTP system.
The "Bytes" value represents a snapshot in time: at each Update Interval,
Sun MTPScan asks the operating system for the size of the queue. Messages may
spend less than the Update Interval on the queue. Such messages will not
figure into the value displayed by "Bytes". Also note that only the values
captured by Sun MTPScan affect the "Max Bytes" datapoint.

CONCLUSIONS
When "Bytes" approaches "Capacity" for the PROCESSQ or any of the Transaction
Server queues, more Transaction Servers may be configured to alleviate server
overload for the Sun MTP system. Examine the Overview Screen to see how the
Transaction Servers are being utilized. If transactions are always being run
in the Transaction Servers during peak production hours and messages are always
waiting to be processed on the PROCESSQ, increase the number of Transaction
Servers.
