User (Overview)

DESCRIPTION
The "User" column shows the system username of the user executing a transaction
in a given Transaction Server.

VALUES
The value of "User" is the system login userid. On UNIX systems, this is kept
in the password (/etc/passwd) file. The value can have at most 8 (usually
lowercase) characters. On Windows NT systems, even though up to 14 characters
are allowed, Sun MTP uses only the first 8.

INTERPRETATION
Each user has a unique userid assigned by the system administrator. Each
userid requires a password to gain access to a user account. Therefore, in an
environment where each user has an individual userid and password, the "User"
datapoint identifies the exact person running a transaction.

CONCLUSIONS
When Sun MTP accounting is turned on, the accounting records use the "User" field
to identify the user running a particular transaction. The administrator can use
the "User"-tagged accounting records to bill a specific user and determine which
users are executing particular transactions.

The "User" field is occasionally blank when the rest of an entry in the Overview
Screen's KxScrolledList has data. The reason is that Sun MTPScan gets this
information from Sun MTP in a read-only manner while Sun MTP constantly updates
these datapoints. Since Sun MTPScan does not lock access to the datapoints, timing
issues can cause these frequently changing datapoints to be out of sync with
respect to one another. Note that this does not happen with other less volatile
KxScrolledLists.
