Segment (Dataset - Seg)

DESCRIPTION
"Segment" identifies the segment number of a particular dataset segment.

VALUES
Currently, Sun MTP allows for a maximum of 8 segments. Therefore, the "Segment"
number ranges from 1 to 8.

INTERPRETATION
All file segment attributes are defined in the Sun MTP File Manager. The size
of each file segment depends on the type of system where Sun MTP resides. On
UNIX systems, each segment can contain up to 2 Gigabytes (G) of information
(this limit is imposed by the UNIX file system). On Windows NT systems, the
maximum size of each segment depends on the maximum file size offered by
the file system in place. For the FAT file system, the maximum file size is
4 Gigabytes. For NTFS, the maximum file size is 2 Terabytes, although this
limit is constrained by hardware limits rather than the NT operating system.

Under Sun MTP, a maximum of 8 segments can be used for a single dataset.

CONCLUSIONS
Sun MTP file segmentation automatically stripes a dataset for both increased file
size and access efficiency. Place segments on different devices (hard disks
and/or disk controllers) to maximize I/O bandwidth.
