Using IntelliPoint or IntelliType software (pointer.exe) 

Pointer.exe is a program that controls some mouse and keyboard options and is incompatible with the encyclopedia. If your computer is running Microsoft® Windows® 3.1 or 3.11, pointer.exe, and Encarta® Encyclopedia, an error message appears asking you to disable pointer.exe. Doing so will disable only the minor functions listed below; your mouse and keyboard will continue to operate.


You may need to download a patch that upgrades your copy of the encyclopedia. The patch allows Encarta Encyclopedia to disable pointer.exe. Download the below patch if the following conditions are true: 

- You're using Windows 3.1 or 3.11, and 
- The error message appears and it does not include a Help button. 



To download and run the patch 

1.Be sure that Encarta Encyclopedia and its ReadMe file are not open.

2.Download the file enc97fix.exe to your hard disk. 

If you're using Internet Explorer, a dialog box appears, asking whether to open the file or save it to disk. Open the file. 

If your're using any other browser then Internet Explorer, the Windows "Save As" dialog box may appear. Before you save the file, be sure that the filename is "enc97fix.exe"--not "enc9.exe". Rename the file if necessary, and then click OK. 

3.If enc97fix.exe does not run automatically, locate the file on your hard disk, and then open the file. Once you've run enc97fix.exe, your copy of Encarta Encyclopedia is able to disable pointer.exe. To disable pointer.exe, run the encyclopedia and follow the instructions on the new error message that appears.

How does Encarta disable pointer.exe? 

Encarta Encyclopedia removes pointer.exe from memory for the current Windows session. The encyclopedia does not remove pointer.exe from your hard disk or permanently disable the program. 

How can I re-enable pointer.exe? 

Do not re-enable pointer.exe while Encarta Encyclopedia is open, or the encyclopedia will no longer function normally. You can enable pointer.exe in one of two ways: 

- In Program Manager, open the Mouse control panel. This causes pointer.exe to run. 
- Restart Windows. This causes pointer.exe to run. 

Does this conflict occur under Windows 95 or Windows NT? 

No, the conflict occurs only under Windows 3.1 or 3.11. No conflict occurs under Windows 95 or Windows NT®.
